Saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch tonight. Wow. Wonderful stuff. I can't even begin to describe it. The official line goes something like "Hedwig, born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to.." etc. etc., but it's so much more than that. As a poster on IMDb put it, "Hedwig is for all of us who've been burned by the one that we thought was our soul-mate. It's for the music lover. It's for the lover of comedy. It's for anyone who wants something new and different. It's for anyone who walked away from the slot machine only to have the very next person win a million dollars on it."

John Cameron Mitchell is simply spectacular (and everyone else, for that matter). What an amazing, sensitive, versatile actor. I was just sitting here, stuck to the screen, mesmerized by song after song after song. I mean, I know it's glam rock and Hollywood and sadness and triumph and truth folded and folded and folded again, but - such intricate skill, nothing was amiss. (I must admit, the dynamic between Hedwig and Yitzhak would maybe become a little clearer with that one scene supposedly cut from the movie put back in, but hey, that's why everything's done with design and for a reason, John (who is also the co-writer and director of this masterpiece) wants us to think a little bit, to not get stuck on characters, but see beyond the story.) Wow. What an experience.
