"You Don't Have to Be a Weatherman...

...to see which way the wind is blowing."

Yes, it's true: I've become addicted to Facebook. That's it; the blog is dead - long live social networking websites!

Now, don't get me wrong, mig81.com is not going anywhere. As I told Edgar the other day, this website primarily started out as a place to collect and showcase my rants, poetry and artwork, and only evolved into a blog later; I would never assign the responsibility of documenting my life's work to a third-party website. But the issue at hand is bigger than that of content: it's not the medium; it's not the technology; it's the people. The revolution will be networked.

If, before, I had to keep track of hundreds of details in my PDA, needing to constantly update them manually, wondering where this person is, and how to get in touch with that one, all I have to do now is take a peek at the profiles of the friends that I network with, who continuously update their information.

Another issue that Facebook solved very gracefully is the integration of new, Web 2.0 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0) services: On-tap photoblogging and moblogging? You've got it! Videos from YouTube? No problem! Public and private, archived, editable, server-side communications? Piece of cake!

Everything about Facebook screams foresight: the database-driven system behind the website is extremely fast and efficient, and features like networks (being able to find friends by parameters such as education, affiliation and mutual friends), groups (being able to find friends by common interests) and photo tags (being able to keep track of who is in what photo, in whose photo album) make full, dynamic use of it. What can I say? I'm glad to see they finally got online social networking right. ;)

P.S. Speaking of YouTube...I am now on YouTube. ;)

No arguments there. ;)

funny, i started with "it's just to appease people," you know... peer pressure. and now i too, have become addicted... brutal.

i don't know much about programming, but i do know about ergonomics and intuitive interfaces, as most people do, and I just found facebook's simple layout so attractive. You don't need much to make it great, and myspace is falling because of that.

side note: sorry about not answering many moons ago about pictures and such, it just became an insanely busy time, including many appointments and tests. I have a few pictures, but my camera is old and uses CF, and my laptop prefers all but CF. I'll upload one day...

It's still all about the convenience factor for me. In other words, I go where it's easiest to keep track of my peeps: instead of (in a way) forcing them to come to me, I come to them. ;) At any rate, why don't you look me up on Facebook?

My thoughts precisely, Paulx: Facebook is simple, clearly-organised and has a powerful backend. 'Nuff said.

Hey, no problem, man. *whistles* CF? Respect! ;)
