Can You Hear Me?!

1:00 AM

This is just to say that Skype 3.5.0.202 is a vile piece of software. Do not upgrade to this version if you know what's good for you.

P.S. The plot thickens. On Skype's Heartbeat page, both sign-in and registration and the peer-to-peer network core are indicated to be down (as of 12:38 AM on August 17, 2007). As well, there is a post from August 16, 2007, that states the following:

UPDATED 14:02 GMT: Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype. Our engineering team has determined that it's a software issue. We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours. Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Additionally, downloads of Skype have been temporarily disabled. We will make downloads available again as quickly as possible.

What does downloading Skype have to do with their network's performance or login issues? This is clearly an indicator that the Skype people fucked something up in the most recent version - bigtime.

P.2S. Will the bullshit never end? On August 16, the Skype people posted the following:

[...] we continue to work hard at resolving the problem [...] The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber attack. [...] This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user's own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network.
I knew it! Then, on August 17, the spokesperson stalled for more time:
Everyone at Skype continues to work hard at resolving the current software issue. We are making good progress. We feel that we are on the right track to bring back services to normal [sic].
Wow, so does this mean Skype won't cut me off or crash, when I'll be trying to make a call, anymore? Bah.

P.3S. Finally, on the evening of the 17th, Skype login seems to work again. I was thinking all day today about this: how can a company that purports to offer a reliable VoIP solution be ever down? Skype, get your shit together.

P.4S. The saga continues. Skype people continue posting lies, such as "My client is now occasionally bringing in stacks of unread multichats. Hope yours too." and "An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know we're not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday." Liars! I am on a 100Mbps, fibre optic connection. Where is my goddamn login?!

P.5S. That's it. Fuck Skype. I'm using Gizmo and I'm loving it. It does not support video yet, but I'm sure they'll implement it soon.

P.6S. On August 18, 2007, Skype is finally up and running, apparently, though no better than a crippled dog. The connection quality is horrendous.

I was able to login for ONE call, then i got booted off again. damnness.

hey. my laptops been invaded... BY ANTS!!! *cries* and i can't even pop off the keys to clean it. damnness. got any ideas on what i can do?

Anyways, to get rid of ants, go to your local computer store and buy a can of compressed air. Aim the nozzle carefully and blow all the ants and dust out of there. Keep it about a foot away from the laptop and try not to spray it on the screen.

As for Skype, you and your friends can use Gizmo for now. It doesn't have video, but it does VoIP tolerably well.

No, no, I just saw it your way and deleted some facts that could have been too revealing.

Anyways, how is the ant problem? Did you buy the compressed air?

Well, I was gone for awhile, eh? Football camp, etc. Reading Jane Eyre because I have to.

Ever try TES IV: Oblivion?

Hey, it's good to have you back. So how (and, most importantly, what) was football camp?

Jane Eyre? *shudder* What are you reading?

Yeah, I tried Oblivion. The idea was nice, but I thought that whoever coded it had two left hands.

I happen to like Jane Eyre!!! :(

the ant problem? gone. i moved my laptop into a closet instead of letting it sit on my nice wooden ant infested table, and the ants have stopped treating my baby as its playground. so YAY!

Hey, if Charlotte Brontë is as boring as Emily Brontë... Man, Wuthering Heights was worse than a bullet to the head for me. I don't care if these works are some sort of proto-novels, super-important to the English language. If there was never any of this endless, roundabout, soap opera-grade drivel, there'd be some other kind.

As far as I'm concerned, Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse is the first novel to break out of this dreadful genre. (I will grant myself one guilty pleasure here, however: Darcy in Pride and Prejudice is a spectacular asshole. ;)

At any rate, I am happy to hear that your MacBook (if memory serves right) is safe from insects. However, I would still prefer if you ran some compressed air through the laptop's keyboard, carefully, as a prophylactic measure.

... how about i just put a condom around the thing?

i have not read To The Lighthouse yet - despite that my majors seminar included it. :P

Rochester in Jane Eyre is equally enjoyable for his obvious male stupidity, besides it has a very soap-opera-esque feel to it. I'm convinced that it was the first of the genre. :)

Around Pride and Prejudice? Now that's an idea! ;)

Heh, I finally see you're getting the hang of Higher Education. First of its genre, eh? Hey, why not. All power to the engines!

P.S. Come to Facebook, by hook or by crook. You don't know what you're missing.
