...or, How I Wasted Another Day. I went to my Japanese class in the morning. Then, I visited my grandparents and had a quick lunch with them. Next, I tried to get in touch with Matthew and Derek to play some Magic, but neither one was available. Thus, I walked over to Oakridge Centre and watched Cloverfield.
The film was kind-of interesting but in the end turned out to be yet another Blair Witch Project, only with a much higher budget and production values, and nothing to speak of in terms of storytelling and characterisation (let alone atmosphere - the film felt more at home with the documentary genre). Less Hemingway, more Bierce, I say; and do something about that shaky camerawork (at more than one point in the film I got some pretty intense headaches). Sure, I enjoyed a few interesting shots here and there, but the film was too much concept and too little content and lacked a sense of closure. What can I say, J.J. Abrams? You can't ride on your name alone (even though Hollywood seems to have the opposite idea). I give this film a B-.
Anyways, where was I? I hopped on the bus home, enjoying the wonderful weather, wandered into The Connection, bought some blue and white singles, as well as a bunch fo blue and white lands, and built a kick-ass white-blue Kithkin deck with all the good cards that were left over from the Battalion precon I have recently acquired (since I couldn't cram them all into my revamped Kithkin Militia: Third Platoon deck).
What else did I do? I chatted to Blazej, choked the chicken, queued up some torrents, and read some stupid-ass threads...anything to avoid that which must be done. Then again, I think I've deserved these two days of rest for the crazy amount of work I've done last week and the crazy amount of work yet to come. Well, stay put, ladies and gentlemen; something's gotta give. ;)
P.S. I did finish one lesson plan after all. Mission accomplished...kind of. ;)
Why is it that you always meet the chicken right after seeing me?
I always found the wake and whack the most satisfying. but i tend to roll over and go back to sleep right after...
the more i think about cloverfield, i think i gave it a long leash because i had to defend it from people who got stuck on the stupid love story or the nauseating camera work. And I really really really wanted to like a decent monster movie. A B or B- sounds like a respectable review score. Would I buy it? no. Would I watch a sequel as they plan to make one? shit no. would I download it for some drunken watching? yeah, i don't see why not. they already took my $6.50 once, i figure i own the rights to a copy.
I'll second that.
Blazej: Because you turn me on so much! Wait, that didn't come out right (pun not intended); no, wait, I think it did - in both senses. Yes. Good.
Paulx: Yeah, what's up with the wave of exhaustion after a good jerk of the 'ol salami, eh?
AHAHAHAHA! I love your philosophy! ;) Anyways, $6.50?! You fucker! I paid $9.99! What the hell?! At any rate, look, I really tried to look past the camera work and the "love story" (What love story?!) tacked on at the end, but the fact is that there was no catharsis in this train wreck. Come on, give me a break; there was not even an explanation of what that stupid-ass monster was, and then you find out - from sources outside of the film - that it's some dumb-ass underwater dinosaur that someone accidentally woke up. Fuck. I liked Dever the Dinosaur better; at least he had snappy 90s one-liners.
Look, I didn't hate Cloverfield; it was kinda edgy and experimental (for a while - emphasis on "kinda"), but the gaps in it, in every possible sense, are just too damn large for me. Would I watch a sequel? Hell, yeah. I would watch a tree for an hour or two. Would it add to my film critic's repertoire of intertextual references? I don't think so.
Blazej: AHAHAHA! I love your spring-loaded seconding action, man. ;)
I finally saw The Godfather last night. Now that is THE movie.
Wonderful. Which parts did you see? I highly recommend that you see all of them, especially part two.
I saw the first part. I'll watch the second part as soon as I can get away from the game.
Spoken like a true culture vulture. ;)
well well.. how's it going dude.
i haven't seen cloverfield yet, but it seems to be buzzing.. good advertising budget i guess. kinda sounds like it doesn't fall neatly into a standard hollywood category. makes me kinda wonder, 'cause before i had no interest in watching it.
How's it going? I'm trying to stage a protest against TransLink. I pushed it back to March. Please come out.
Cloverfield can go to hell. I can't wait to finish Atlas Shrugged and to ask you the questions I tried to ask Dr. Peikoff (Ayn Rand's former student and the executor of her estate - who, by the way, told me to piss off).
