A Woman in a Picture

This poem was originally written under Derek Choy's name, for an English class assignment that required him to perform ekphrasis on a painting.

A calm blue ocean of the deep blue sky,
A sunbeam strikes the colours of the room.

A woman—
               sits there
Reading

Absorbing the light fragrance of the words
In the bright sunlight,

Relaxed in her heavenly guise,
           not knowing the truth,
                       subject to the present.

But truth will be revealed:
           As heavenly as life is,

Nothing but deceit
Surrounds her.

In her endless dream
           comes the end.
